Human freedom lies in our ability to choose how we respond to life’s circumstances, shaping our “felt experience” of the moment. This is the essence of freedom. While we cannot always control the what of our life situation, we can take responsibility for the how—how we carry ourselves in the moment.

Some life situations are undeniably painful, distressing, and inhumane. Many of our fellow human beings endure unimaginable suffering. It is often those of us with safety, privilege, and opportunity who are able to reflect philosophically on human freedom.

Still, with humble respect, I am deeply inspired by those heroes who have faced great suffering and found ways to live with grace, courage, humor, love, and kindness.

Visioning: The Dance of Being and Becoming

Being
A central theme in The Embodied Life teachings is “Being-ness”—the ability to be present in the reality of the current moment. True connection, satisfaction, and intimacy arise from our willingness to be “here, now.” Life is always experienced in the present—now, now, now.

Becoming and Visioning
As humans, our now encompasses the past and the future; it’s not a fleeting moment in isolation. We are co-creators of our lives. Our intentions, hopes, and visions for the future shape the nows yet to come.

  • Growing our capacity for presence in the moment—our “Being-ness”—is an ongoing journey, forever unfolding.
  • As co-creators, we influence both the attitude and presence we bring to each moment and the possibilities we envision for the future.

Choosing to be present in the moment is a creative act.
Carrying visions, intentions, and hopes for our unfolding life is also a creative act.
