Space: The Embodied Life & Spatial Awareness With Russell & Linda Delman
Spatial awareness is often a missing or undervalued aspect of embodiment. This awareness orients in two directions - the vast inner spaces that exist within our physical bodies and the outer spaces that surrounds us at every moment. This outer space includes the physical as well as social environment, both of which inform our living at every moment.
Inner Space
The sense of pressure is a common experience in our modern world. There is the pressure to know more as infinite streams of information bombard us. The sense of time pressure as our schedules fill up and we try to do more each day. There can even be a sense of pressure arising from the intention to be Present and Not to feel pressured! All these senses of pressure involve compression within the tissues of our bodies. Learning to sense the great spaciousness that exists within our bodies at any moment can create instant relief and even help in changing motor patterns. Many of our chronic pain conditions, as well as movement difficulties, are connected to a sense of having no space.
Outer Space
In the Feldenkrais Method®, we often speak of working with the nervous system which naturally includes the perceptual experience of each moment. More than our skeleton, muscles and soft tissues, we orient in the world through our perception of space. As martial artists, actors, and dancers know, how we inhabit space radically effects our inner experience, our movement options, and how others perceive us. When we are conscious of the "field in which our actions are occurring", our self-organization and self-perception are transformed.
In this Embodied Life™ seminar, we will explore the shift from compression to spaciousness using Feldenkrais® movement lessons, guided Meditations, vertical movement gestures and interactive, awareness practices. While the seminar is primarily experiential, a clear conceptual understanding of the value and importance of spatial awareness will be offered.
